Hopefully you are all doing well and excited for the next PSC meeting, which will take place this Wednesday, March 3rd at 7:00pm in Greg 113.
This week we will be doing a discussion on environmental politics and policies. To help guide our discussion, we are going to have Professor Robert Pahre there. He won’t be lecturing, just asking some thought and discussion-provoking questions.
This is our first time with this subject so bring all your pent up conservationism and global warming related energy on Wednesday!
Update: The bar crawl date has been changed to Wednesday, December 9th.
First of all, we will be interviewing applicants for a vacancy on our exec board for next semester. Unfortunately, we will be losing our Secretary after this semester so we are looking for a qualified candidate to fill the position. We will be holding interviews the nights of Sunday, December 6th and Monday, the 7th. The application form can be found here and is due along with a resume by Thursday, December 3rd at 11:59 pm. For those of you that may be interested but aren’t entirely sure what the Secretary does, he/she is responsible for keeping an accurate record of membership information, minutes from general meetings, and collecting membership dues. The Secretary also initiates outreach to potential members. More importantly, the Secretary, along with the rest of the board, plays a major role in shaping what kinds of things PSC does. So if this interests you, please send in an application (which can be found here) and a resume by December 3rd to us at PSCuiuc@gmail.com.
Also, because some of our committee members will be applying to fill the spot, we may end up having a committee position open as well. This position could involve fundraising, PR, or social events. If you submit your application for the Secretary position, you will also be considered for the committees if a vacancy opens up.
Bar Crawl
The PSC Fall semester barcrawl is scheduled for Wednesday, December 9th. Believe it or not, December isn’t that far away so start planning now. Currently we are planning on using our T-shirts from last year. If you do not have last year’s shirt and want to attend the barcrawl, shoot us an email and we’ll figure out a way to get you a shirt. We’ll send out more specific information about this later but for now keep it in mind.
PSC will meet tomorrow, Wednesday, November 11th at 7pm in Greg 113. This week, in light of the recent shootings across the country, we are going to be talking a little bit about gun control. We’ll be able to touch on any facet of the subject you guys want, so come ready.
We are also going to be ordering pizza for everyone that attends the meeting. Everyone knows that nothing goes with politics quite like pizza. You KNOW you want free pizza. We’ll also have the sign-up sheet for T-shirts. If you want to get your shirt, you are running out of time so make sure to sign up tomorrow or shoot us an email with your name and size.
Another reminder: White Horse Cup Night
On Thursday, PSC will be hosting a fundraiser at the White Horse Inn. We’ll be there from 9:00pm to 2:00am selling cups for $5.00. Come buy a cup from us and get some awesome drink specials all night.
We would like to reiterate that PSC does not condone illegal or irresponsible behavior. It is illegal for anyone under 19 to be in the bar and for anyone under 21 to drink. You all know this and the exec board expects we are all capable of handling Thursday night in a mature fashion. We all want to have fun but we hope to do that without breaking any laws or putting anyone’s health in danger.
There will be a PSC meeting tomorrow, September 16th at 7:00pm in Greg 113. My apologies to those of you who were looking forward to meeting and chatting with our new Trustee Chris Kennedy this Wednesday. We have made contact with Mr. Kennedy and he has expressed interest in coming to talk with us, however he is regrettably unavailable this week. We are going to try and schedule him for our next meeting. So those of you who were looking forward to that meeting, don’t despair.
In the meantime, this week’s meeting will focus on the hot button topic of Healthcare Reform. There will be no speaker and we hope you all come with plenty to say on the subject. Topics we will touch on include but are certainly not limited to the proposed “public option,” the various political strategies involved for both sides of the debate, funding options, the proposed mandate for all Americans to have health insurance, and the proposed regulation of the private insurance market.
I know that all might sound a bit overwhelming, but have no fear. The discussion will go as fast or as slow and in whichever direction you all desire. As usual, our debate will be lively and varied with just the right amount of fervent chaos thrown in there. I’m looking forward to it. Hope to see many of you there.
The first meeting of the year will be held this Wednesday, September 2nd at 7:00 in 114 David Kinley Hall. For those of you that don’t know, DKH is the building just West of the South Quad and 114 is the large lecture hall right in the middle of the building.
The first meeting should be fairly brief and we ought to get out of there in an hour or so. We’ll introduce this year’s executive board and our plans for the year, spend some time getting to know each other, and of course take a minute or two to talk some politics. We will have membership forms for everyone to fill out and if you bring $15 and pay your dues, we just might have some left over T-shirts from last year as an added bonus…
So, if you’re as excited about PSC as we are (or at least mildly curious), come on out on Wednesday.
